| my opinion is simple. . .
well hell, yes . . . and a whole freaking lot of years ago !!
soooooooooooooooo what do the rest of you think ? Here's the story in a nutshell. Roman Polanski is of course the famous movie director whos wife was Sharon Tate - the vicitim of Charles Manson's family. I'm sure the man had his heart torn away with the brutal murder of his wife carrying thier almost term baby. About 8 years later I believe he was filming the movie Chinatown with Jack Nicholson and took a young girl to Nicholsons house and plied her with champagne and qualudes. He had sex with her and filmed it. The girl was 13. Polanski admitted to the event and was placed in a psychiatric facility for evaluation. After leaving that facility and before appearing for trial, he jetted off to France where they don't extradite. He's lived a totally free life in Europe now for more than 30 years making movies and traveling around Europe. He should have been caught long ago upon leaving France but probably his celebrity status allowed it to be passed over. Soooooooooo now he's going to recieve and award ( in Switzerland I think ) and its quite public he will be there so when he gets off the plane they arrest him and extradite him. Many people feel it should have been dropped long ago and have sympathy for this man in his late 70's who's been through so much in his life and want him set free.
me ? nah . . . he should face the charges and go to prison like anyone else and it should have happened long, long ago. If his horrible experiences have created a man capable of raping a 13 year old girl and keeping a souvenir on camera then he needs to be removed from society. I'm not giving any passes. She was a child. I'm sure she didn't think she was and didn't much act like one. But that means nothing. He was the adult. God, the seventies were a crazy time indeed.

| I'll have to agree with you. My heart goes out to him for his wife and baby's death all those years ago, but one has nothing to do with the other.
Celebrities get away with too many things and I don't understand why. Just because you have money doesn't mean you should be able to live by a different set of rules.

| Yep......I agree - throw this scum in prison where he should have been long ago. It makes no difference what his age is right now......what he did with a 13 year old was unconscionable and the fact that he has escaped punishment for all these years doesn't mean he should continue to escape. | |

| I saw an interview with the woman who was the 13 year old victim many years ago and she has no ill will towards Polanski and also would like the case dropped. Sorry...when you drug and rape a child, you must pay, no matter who you are. | |

| Heres the story
Sep 28, 2009
"My girlfriend was supposed to come along as my chaperone but at the last minute Polanski said it would be better if she didn't come. She went home and Mom didn't realise I was on the shoot alone." At the mansion Polanski got to work. The teenager was impressed by house in its fabulous position overlooking the city, although Nicholson was away skiing. Samantha was thirsty so Polanski found a bottle of champagne and opened it by the pool. She remembers: "He took shots of me everywhere. He was taking pictures and topping up my glass constantly." After four or five glasses Samantha was tipsy. Soon he was photo-graphing her nude in a whirlpool bath. Then Polanski stripped off and joined her.
"That was when it turned," says Samantha. "He said 'come here', put his arm around me and touched me on the shoulders. "I realised I had put myself in a bad situation. I got scared and said I had asthma and couldn't breathe. I said I had to get out of the tub. "As quick as I could get out of that Jacuzzi I got out. He was older and I didn't think it right we should be hanging out in the tub." Polanski tried to comfort her. He told her to take half a tablet of the drug Quaalude - a powerful sedative - claiming it would help her asthma, before suggesting she move into the bedroom to sit down. "We sat on the sofa and that's when it happened," says Samantha. "He started kissing me, I protested but then just submitted. I'd been drinking and was too frightened to push him off - he was a famous guy, he was intimidating. We were alone and it was pitch-black. I was scared. I knew what he was gonna do - and I didn't want him to do it. "All I could think was let's get through this
this and I can get home. I just froze up." Polanski had intercourse with Samantha, performed oral sex and sodomised her. He then drove her home saying: "Don't tell your mum or your boyfriend, this is our little secret." Back at her house, Samantha ran to her room while Polanski charmed her mum. It was not until much later she found out what really happened. Samantha's mother overheard a telephone conversation in which her daughter told her boyfriend about the rape. Polanski, who won an Oscar for The Pianist in 2003, was arrested and spent 45 days behind bars. His six charges including unlawful sex with a minor and forcible rape and in a bizarre twist the trial was set for August 9, the eighth anniversary of Sharon Tate's death. In fact, it was never held. A friend of Polanski's overheard the judge vow to put him away for "100 years" and the director fled the US never to return.
Wow is all I can say
I'm sure there was a certain amount of little girl trying to be big girl famous here that might have led him to believe she wanted this but come on now - sodomy ? take this it will help your asthma ?
He should have been locked up. He's an animal on the loose and I don't care how old he is now.

| I so totally agree
i do have a question tho - what about statute of limitations - Often on the tv law shows (and yes I know they are not real life) but esp Law and Order Spec. Victims , they refer to not beng able to prosecute because of 7 years having passed. So how is this with RP happening? |

| maybe because he's already been charged ? maybe it's the charges that have to be pressed within a certain amount of time...
I dunno.....
well anyway, you can run all you want but you can't hide from God... eventually he'll have to face a judge of one type or another...
I just hope the 'girl' has been able to be helped...

| from cnn.com
It should have ended three decades ago, when Polanski pleaded guilty to a single count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. He would have been given credit for time served while undergoing an evaluation and placed on probation.
But Polanski fled the country before sentencing, fearing the judge would back out of the plea bargain and sentence him to prison.
so he's already been to court on the original charges NOW he's in trouble for running.....
