PostSubject: I have a question about Michelle Obama's Dress last night   I have a question about Michelle Obama's Dress last night EmptyWed Nov 05, 2008 10:26 pm

Please, Please don't get mad at me. It's just an observation I made and an opinion. It isn't in any way whatsoever meant to be mean....or unkind.

I was wondering if it was just me last night when I seen Michelle Obama and that dress she was wearing.

I have never seen her in anything that I thought wasn't nice, or beautiful. She and Cindy McCain were always dressed so classy. I have to give them that. They are both very classy women.

I just didn't get that dress last night, it was horrible. I mean compared to the beautiful outfits she has worn for the past two years when she was so much in the spotlight.

I kept looking at it trying to figure it out. It was a very strange looking dress.

I thought that it might have been one of those dresses that looks great on the hanger, or maybe up close....Or someone sooo lied to her and told her she looked good in it knowing she didn't

Anyway, I know now it wasn't just me. Many of my friends that are big fans of her thought the same thing. And a few of the nurses at the hospital where Pete is said the same thing.

I actually found a couple of articles here and there throughout the day and there weren't many compliments in regards to what she wore. Especially on such a special night.

This is a little bit about the Designer and who he has desigened for in the past: "Narciso Rodriguez Fall ‘09 red shift. This is the guy best known for designing the glorious, elegant and simple wedding dress worn by Carolyn Bessette who married JFK, Jr."

I actually read some other comments about this today. I did notice and thought - hmm...different dress...but then I moved on. I think she is a beautiful woman and I love that she is not a size 2!!!!

I'm guessing that she must have loved the dress (otherwise not sure why she would pick it) and it just happens to not be an overall likeable dress to most of us.

And by the way - I'm not mad at you!!!!!hiya

I noticed that right away too but I think she was trying to look kind of understated and maybe she didnt want to overdress and take the spotlight off of her husband.

I said to Jamie before she walked out. Won't you just die if she comes out in a plain sheath dress and pill box hat.

So for that reason, I noticed right away what she was wearing and kind of went ??? but oh well, it wasn't her night.

All the kids looked cute I thought and they were so wide-eyed with disbelief at the ovations. The grandmother too - she was PRICELESS !!! ht

She has such great style that it really surprised me. She never looks over dressed to me, she is usually a very classy dresser.

It just wasn't a nice dress at all. I think it was her night too Morgan.
I know Obama was the one running for President, but it's a family effort too. It took a lot of time and effort on all of them for the past two years.
Even the kids were part of the process. It was an exciting night for all of them.

I just hope she never wears that dress again.
The girls always look so cute. They are such pretty little girls. And they will finally get that dog they were promised.....That's probably all they cared about last night..lol

It's just a dress Janey! Very Happy

Maybe she loves it. Maybe it looks better in person than on the tube. Maybe she looked for something subdued and not flashy. Who knows?

I prefered looking at the shining pride on their faces.

i'm not about to throw stones at a fashion statement made by someone else, after seeing and dissecting what Clay has worn in public on occasion LOL
...i think the matter of the M/O dress thing is way overblown. typical media stuff, looking to expand on a topic that has little significance.
i'm more interested in seeing the dog that is chosen to share the White House residence...and i hope they don't dress him/her up!!!!

I did kinda do a double take LOL but figured she was just trying to portray the image of regular mom and wife...or perhaps she LOVED the dress.....either way doesnt matter, mostly I was affected by the looks on the faces of them all...the kids and when Michelle hugged Barak and said "I love you" I felt an overwhelming sense of pride for their family.....I always have seen them that way, as a normal loving couple with beautiful children...I so wish them well as a family and pray for our new president that he can lead us into a strong future.....

I would fully expect to pay hundreds to stand in the light of history. Maybe it had some signifigance to her, what do we know really.

All we know is what we see and ummm it was kind of ugly. lol. But geesh, it wasnt that bad !

However, some fashion insiders have praised Mrs Obama for choosing an American label for the night.

“That dress was unpretentious,” said Julie Gilhart, the fashion director of Barneys New York. “It said, ‘Be who you are — don’t let someone else tell you how to be.’ ”

Mrs Obama's staff have said she does not use a personal stylist.

Actually I dont think the dress was all that bad - it was just the little black sweater she had on with it that was kind of competing with it.

Palin was standing in history too but she was trounced for having had some money spent on her. Not sure of the difference except Obama made it to the white house. Palin was making history too. But either way the dress was awful

The dress is ugly to me too, but we all have different tastes.

Making history comes with lots of scrutiny. I hope they are prepared!

After looking at the pictures, I think she chose the dress to unify the family. One daughter wore red - one wore black - and of course you want to look complimentary standing next to the man in the black suit. Looks like it was simply a good idea gone wrong.

Where was Palin standing in history ? She wasn't the first woman to be a running mate. She was however headed for history if they won and I'd certainly expect her clothes at that time to reflect that. It was the fact that her clothes and make up were so excessive during the campaign that was brought to light. It wasn't about taxpayers money spent - it was contribution money spent but still it showed where their spending priorities were and that just didn't sit well in a failing economy. They tried to make a star out of Palin, when what they needed to make her was a strong leader instead. How she is presented to the public is very important and her presentation was all about beauty queen - thus she suffered the beauty queen, brainless stereotype. McCain's campaign made a lot of mistakes in judgement that cost him the election. He may well have had the better answers for the country but it doesnt matter if you can't float your campaign. If the campaign sinks you simply have to believe his cabinet and presidency will too. Thus he loses the election.

The other big difference is that Palin is actually running for office and Michelle is not. The only fair comparison there would be to compare what Obama's wife spends on her clothes to what McCain's wife spends on her clothes and I think you know which way that will go.

What do you mean by that Morgan?

I have heard a lot of comments like this (from a few Black people )
"They are the Black Kennedy's" and "We now have our version of the Kennedy's in the White House"

I don't particularly care for comments like that. As long as people continue to think like that or believe that, there will always be a race issue.

He wouldn't have won the election without the support of White's, Hispanic's, Latino's and many other races. Black people need to understand that he isn't just their President.

One thing that really concerned me was a person in Africa saying "now we will have someone in the United States that will help us".

The United States is the most generous country no matter who the President is, that comment made me feel really sad and concerned. He will be the President of the United States, not the world.

?????

didn't understand that statement at all Janey.

My comment was meant as Obama is Democrat, has a young family, is charismatic, young and is now walking into the white house . . .

race ? where do you hear anything about race in that ?

Obama has a young Kennedy vibe about him with his stirring speechs and young children at his side. I'm simply saying I hope the presidency is a safe place for him and we don't see a repeat of the horror of Dallas.

I didn't know what you were referring to in regards to JFK.
And hoping the same thing doesn't happen.

I didn't mean to imply it had anything to do with race. Sorry for that misunderstanding. Your statement came out of nowhere. I thought I had maybe missed something.

My comment was about people comparing him to JFK and him being the "Black JFK"

What I said had nothing to do with what you said......

I didn't know what you were referring to, it sounded like you had heard something, did you hear something to that effect, that him being a Democrat, having a young family and so forth that the same could happen to him? Or were you just thinking that?

What I was commenting on was what I had personally heard others saying in regards to the comparisin to the JFK

I understand where you are coming from Morgan. Reagan wasn't a young man and he was almost killed. Look at the Pope too.
