Obama Lays Plans to Kill Expectations After
Election Victory

Confident in an Election Day win, the campaign looks to lower supporters' expectations on concerns their hopes of 'change' are unrealistic, a senior aide says

Friday, 2008-31-10

By Tim Reid, The Times of London
Barack Obama's senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency if he wins next week's election, amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harboring unrealistic hopes of what he can achieve.

The sudden financial crisis and the prospect of a deep and painful recession
have increased the urgency inside the Obama team to bring people down to earth, after a campaign in which his soaring rhetoric and promises of "hope" and "change" are now confronted with the reality of a stricken economy.

One senior adviser told The Times that the first few weeks of the transition, immediately after the election, were critical, "so there's not a
vast mood swing from exhilaration and euphoria to despair."
The aide said that Obama himself was the first to realize that expectations
risked being inflated.

In an interview with a Colorado radio station, Obama appeared to be
engaged already in expectation
lowering. Asked about his goals for the first hundred days, he said he would need more time to tackle
such big and costly issues as health care reform, global warming and
Iraq.

"The first hundred days is going to be important, but it's probably
going to be the first thousand days
that makes the difference," he
said. He has also been reminding crowds in recent days how "hard" it will be to achieve his goals, and that it will take time.

"I won't stand here and pretend that any of this will be easy -- especially
now," Obama told a rally in Sarasota, Florida, yesterday, citing "the
cost of this economic crisis, and the cost of the war in Iraq."
Obama's
transition team is headed by John Podesta, a Washington veteran and a former chief-of-staff to Bill Clinton. He has spent months overseeing a virtual Democratic government-in-exile to plan a smooth transition should Obama emerge victorious next week.

The plans are so far advanced that an Obama Cabinet has been largely decided upon, with the expectation that most of his senior appointments could be announced shortly after election day.

Just like all the rest I see a big

and even more than that I see a need for exactly what they are doing - if Obama can't bring about 'quick' change he'll tank in the next election and sorry no one can bring about quick change right now.

The troops will be home before you now it. We will have more money to spend, we will all have health care.....What else has he promised?

Morgan, I can understand being weary of hearing anti-Obama rhetoric. I do understand that. But do you really mean this? Obama is already backpedaling and for you it's just a "so what"?

That I don't understand. Obama's expectations are based on HIS promises. Are you saying that you have no problem with him breaking those promises?

That I just really don't understand. Can you please explain?

I dont read that as backpedaling.

I read that as good business - people are hurting and want immediate answers. I have not heard Obama say he could accomplish these things in months or weeks but I'm sure once he's in there thats what people will expect.

The purpose to me sounds like . . . ok now that you're president lets get these people to realize its going to take time - if we dont you're in trouble quickly when change doesn't happen in the blink of an eye.

No one keeps their campaign promises. I see only from them the direction in which they'd like to steer. And on that I make my decision.

I'd be willing to bet McCain's team is working on the same thing right now.

Morgan, he promised tax cuts for people earning less than 250,000. Then he said, no wait, 200,000. Then he said No wait, 150000.

I believe that defines "back pedaling".

IMO, your time would be better spent telling me how McCain would make things better, than to constantly speak of how Obama will ruin everything.

I have seen very, very little of that here, in the media or out of John McCain's mouth. Really, I do not carry the what I view as hatred that some of you have for Obama, for McCain. I just do not see McCain as spelling out why I should vote for him.

Renee, you are forgetting Richardson saying it is now at 120K.....It will come down to probably around 50k by the time he is in office.....

Another big promise is to bring the troops home asap. My husband is in hospital at the moment (VA) and let me tell you, the Vets aren't buying into his bringing the troops home in victory as soon as he is in office.

Was that somewhere in the original post that I was commenting on ? I'm starting to drown in all of this I think.

As for the amounts stated - has Obama said that out of his mouth or on paper with him signing it ? You guys are easy prey if you believe everything you hear.

Yes Morgan,

Obama began the decline himself, then it was Biden and then Richardson.

Obama has been saying for as ling as he has been selling this to us that it was 250k. THen last week he brought it down to 200k, then Biden said 150k and then Richardson said 120k.

No one has come forward to say it was still 250k, not even Obama.
If it were a mistake Obama would have corrected it after this long, or a spokesperson from the Obama camp would have cleared this up.

So the answer to your question is yes, Obama began the downslide from 250k to 120k.

At this point of the campaign people that may have already voted believeing the amount to be 250k, can't do anything about it.

They and many that have already made up their minds may not even be following the news right now and aren't aware of the change, so he once again lied and got away with it.

Yes Morgan he did say that out of his own mouth.

I think that is why it's such a huge concern. The fact that it's out of his and Biden's own mouths makes it all the more real that it will continue to drop.

No one knows where the Middle Class begins and ends.

I don't think any member of this board is gullible enough to think their candidate will be able to fullfill the majority of their promises. It's never happened before and I doubt it will ever happen.

I do truly believe my candidate will be the best representative for all the people and for the good of the country.

I cast my vote at 8:30 and I was #217. I live in the suburbs and I didn't have to wait in line. I don't envy the voters in the big cities who will have to wait hours in line, however I would do that if I had to. It is very important to vote.

In Harrisburg, PA there were many reports of door hangers and phone calls in poor and less educated neighborhoods telling people that their voting places had changed (when they haven't of course) and also that they would be arrested when they arrived to vote if they had an unpaid parking ticket etc. I am sure the same kind of fear tactics will be reported all accross the country.

Again, I say may the best man win.
