| I have to say McCain was the best I have ever seen him. He was so funny. I have never seen Hilary Clinton laugh so hard ever. The things he said about Bill were hilarious. She looked like she was about to fall over from laughter. She really enjoyed the jokes, especially about Bill. McCain is really good at this. He praised Obama and said a lot of very nice things about him, that was very nice. Obama had a good laugh too. And when it was Obama's turn McCain laughed a lot too....And Obama was gracious and kind also towards McCain. I McCain was funny for sure when MSNBC right afterwards gave him props and said he was the funniest of the two. Especially coming from Rachael Maddow. She hates McCain. Obama was ok too. Didn't quite get the amount of laughter. I think it was because his habit of pausing and stuttering, especially during the punch line......But he was funny... All in all it was great to see both of them lighten-up and have a laugh. They all looked great in White Tie. Very dapper indeed. They should show it again on Fox in about 45 mins or so. Fox showed it in full from the beginning. MSNBC showed it almost at the end of McCain and I think all of Obama. To really enjoy it you need to watch from the beginning, it's just as much fun watching the audience having such a wonderful time.....Lots of big names too.
It muct have been a nice break for Obama and McCain....A nice fun evening to have a good laugh and chill. They both must be exhausted by now. |

| I have to say, I loved it when Obama was being funny....loved John's part too. As touching as Obama's closing was....and it was...this was not the venue for it. The point of this evening was light-hearted, to roast one another and poke fun at the election. I feel like Obama took unfair advantage of being "the closer".
That said, I wish he would have made that speech at the debate. That was a good speech. | |

| Both McCain and Barack were really funny .....so good in fact, that there are rumors that even Joe the Plummer and Renee are taking a second look at Barack. It was good to see this human side of both of the candidates. They kind of remind me of us here at CAPCH....how we can one minute be discussing important political issues and the next be laughing at and with each other. Gotta start getting it together to head for the Gala....try not be beat up on Messiah, I mean Barack, or That Other One (Clay) while I'm gone! |

| Ok thats what I thought I was like did I hear something wrong......from Renees post I thought she meant that Obama was the only one who did the whole "sweet talk and sentiment" at the roast but obviously they BOTH did....so that makes me feel better....yes it was a night for joking and all that but I feel it was tremendously respectful and sweet for both men to close the way they did after their roastings.....
carry on.. |

carry on.. You are something else Heather.....So sweet. You always worry about something, it really is sweet! They were both as they should have been at the end of their funny routine, very classy! I can't get Hilary out of my mind though, I have never seen her laugh and have such fun. She laughed her butt off when McCain was roasting Bill, it was funny. It was great to see her enjoying herself. She looked great too. Very rested and relaxed. |

| awww Janey I just love you...your so darn sweet to me... I just rewatched both roasts and I gotta tell you they BOTH had me laughin my butt off....but Obama....the crack about "I wasnt born in a manger" "I fathered to african american children IN wedlock" "someone yelled out NOBAMA about not thinking he should be the democratic runner and he really wished Joe Biden hadnt done that" OMG I was gonna pee my pants hahaha so funny but yes they both had great words to say about one another at the end, so I personally didnt feel that either one of them took or had any advantage with those closing statements...I felt sincerity from both and it has truly made me see both of them in new lights.... thnx again Janey |

| I wasnt born in a manger about made me spit coke all over my living room !!!! omg and the other one that cracked me up was I have my faults . . . sometimes I'm just too awesome. As for the purpose of the event and whether it was the place for serious talk . . . well. . . . I dont know the purpose of the event and the humor might have actually been what was truly out of place. Anyone know the purpose of the event ? ~~~~~~~~~~~ | |

~~~~~~~~~~~ It's tradition Morgan, as reported in the story below. "The two men spoke at the 63rd annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children. An estimated $4 million was raised. The event often draws politicians as speakers and, by long tradition, presidential candidates appear as headliners every four years."Link to complete story: http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/16/mccain-obama-poke-fun-charity-dinner/-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is video of Al Gore and George Bush in 2000. http://theteleprompter.com/Al_Gore/video:george-w-bush-and-al-gore-at-2000-alfred-e-smith-dinner-roast-hq/ |
| For Heather,"Both men closed with compliments. McCain praised Obama for his "great skill, energy, and determination. It's not for nothing that he's inspired so many folks in his own party and beyond," he said of his rival, bidding to become the nation's first black president. "I can't wish my opponent luck but I do wish him well." Obama said few Americans had served their country with "the same honor and distinction" as McCain, a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam."
