Should this high school coach have been fired ?

For ten years now the man has been the football coach in a South Carolina high school. Whenever the team would win they would use a marker to make a funny face on a watermelon...circle around it and go oo oo oo like monkies. ?then break open the watermelon and eat it. A parent complained it was racist and he was fired. The NAACP supported the decision.


Come on now....Im sure kids of every color participated in this for ten years and looked forward to it after the win. I think its absolutely insulting to the black race to even suggest that its racist. Is this how they view themselves? Why would they even go near that. Its kids having fun with tradition...and watermelons go farther to feed the crowd than cantelopes for petes sake. It could have been any kind of fruit. All kids enjoy acting like monkies....so now thats not allowed?

They offered the coach his job back if he will agree to sensitivety training. So is there a class on how African Americans get insulted if you act like a monkey or draw a face on a watermelon? I sure hope not. We have a Black president.... What does it take for some people to accept that there is tespect and change out there....embrace it and dont go looking for insults where none was intended.

I dont think this coach should ever have been fired. Nix the ceremony if that seems appropriate but firing the coach gors too far.

I'm not saying I agree with it, but facts:
It's in the south - I think you might have to live in the south to have a better perspective of the situation.  What is the composition (race) of the school or the area?

Even "football team".  

Put them all together - perhaps along with other facts the news isn't yet telling - maybe about the coach, or the school or the area, or other antics.  

At the very least I say it's a little fishy.

I just wish Black people had a better self image and didnt see things like that as purposely directed at them. I think thats what we need to address. There is just so much over reaction and reverse predjudice out there which Black people just accept. There will never be true equality unril they accept it for themselves. Its time! The President of the United States.....voted into office by people of all colors should inspire them to leave the percieved insults behind. Its a new world...embrace it and stop setting yourself apart.

NAACP national association for the advancement of colored people.......Colored People? Are white people allowed to say that? And how come its only one color.

UNCF United Negro College Fund..... Isnt that word taboo? ? Unless of course they call themselves that I guess. And of course they insist on calling each other the more hated word also....I Just dont get that. It shows a lack of self respect.

African American......that one really gets me. I just cant even call anyone that. I think its ridiculous to assume that all Black people were dragged out of Africa and brought to America. For all I know, I could be talking to someone born and raised in Ireland or Japan or Haiti. They might not be African at all. ?..or American.for that matter. What happened to Im Black and Im Proud. That was a great lesson for children. Now its Im African American maybe and Im confused cause I came from El Salvador.

Cant we just all live together in love and respect and stop seeing insults hiding behind every action? I miss the sixties. Peiple in my world didnt see color...they saw people. Just freaking love one another already ! I thought it would be so much better by now.

Thats why I thought Id better move this thread. I know not everyone shares my views. I just dont see why people get offended so easily. I hate walking on eggshells around people because they are Black or handicapped or a different religion, etc. I just want to see people treat each other as people and not have to overthink everything.
